Tawhidul Islam: A Notable Journalist and Community Organizer
Mahbubur Rahman: Tawhidul Islam is a distinguished writer, journalist, and organizer hailing from Sylhet, Bangladesh. Born in 1988 in a respected Muslim family in Jhingabari Mirmati village, Kanaighat Upazila, he grew up in an environment that emphasized the value of education and community service. His father, Engineer Akhtaruzzaman, and mother, Zaheda Begum, played pivotal roles in shaping his values and aspirations. Tawhidul completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) in 2004, his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) in 2006, and earned his Bachelor’s degree in 2011.
From an early age, Tawhidul demonstrated a passion for writing and journalism. He began his career in 2004, contributing to various print newspapers that served the local and regional communities. His work has appeared in notable publications, including Daily Sylhet Protidin, Daily Sylhet Bani, Daily Jalalabad, and Daily Alokito Sylhet. In 2010, he took a significant step by launching his own weekly newspaper, Apurbo Sylhet. The publication quickly gained traction and became popular for its in-depth reporting and commitment to local issues. This venture marked a turning point in his career, allowing him to carve out a niche as a voice for the community.
Currently, Tawhidul serves as the editor of NewsChamber24.com, an online news portal that has been registered with the Ministry of Information since 2015. Under his leadership, the portal has become a vital source of news and information, focusing on transparency, integrity, and community-centric journalism. Tawhidul’s commitment to journalistic ethics is evident in his approach to reporting, often prioritizing the truth over sensationalism.
In addition to his editorial role, Tawhidul is actively involved in various press organizations. He currently serves as the Treasurer of the Sylhet Online Press Club and has previously held the position of IT Secretary at the Kanaighat Press Club. His dedication to the profession has not come without its challenges. In 2011, Tawhidul faced significant adversity when a controversial report led to his newspaper being set on fire. This incident tested his resolve but ultimately reinforced his commitment to courageous and principled journalism.
Beyond his journalistic pursuits, Tawhidul has also ventured into public service. In 2016, he ran for the position of Chairman of the Jhingabari Union Parishad, showcasing his desire to effect change within his community. More recently, in 2024, he prepared to run for Vice Chairman of the Kanaighat Upazila Parishad. However, he ultimately decided to withdraw from the race due to concerns regarding the fairness of the electoral process. This decision reflects his principled stance on governance and his commitment to the integrity of democratic practices.
Tawhidul is also an accomplished author, having published two noteworthy books. His first book, “Kanaighat Index and Alokito Kanaighat,” was released in 2011 and provided valuable insights into local culture and history. His second book, “Neglect in the Mother Tongue,” published in 2016, addresses the challenges faced by native languages in the face of globalization and modernization. These works not only highlight his literary talent but also his deep concern for cultural preservation and education.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Tawhidul is actively engaged in various social initiatives. He is a lifetime member of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Sylhet Unit, where he contributes to humanitarian efforts in the region. As a member of the Safe Roads Sylhet District Committee, he advocates for road safety and awareness, aiming to reduce accidents and improve infrastructure. Tawhidul has also held significant roles in other community organizations, working to address issues that affect the lives of his fellow citizens. His involvement with the Jhingabari Community Clinic and the Mirmati Jame Mosque Management Committee further exemplifies his commitment to community service and welfare.
On a personal note, Tawhidul has been married since 2018 to the daughter of Mohammad Ahmad from Shibnagar village in Kanaighat Municipality. Together, they have two daughters, and he often emphasizes the importance of family and education in nurturing the next generation. Tawhidul’s life reflects a harmonious blend of professional ambition and dedication to his community, making him a respected figure in both journalism and public service. His journey continues to inspire those around him, as he remains steadfast in his mission to uplift and inform his community.
